Other Meetings of Interest

Special School Board meeting being held on Jan 17 at A.Y. Jackson at 7 pm.

This special meeting is a public meeting addressing options for dealing with severe overcrowding in some elementary schools in Kanata that has resulted from demand for French Immersion and introduction of Full Day Kindergarten.  Although it is focused on elementary schools, one of the possible options would be to teach grades 7 and 8 at Earl of March, making it effectively a grades 7 to 12 school.  This would have impact on facilities and scheduling, although many believe it would advantageous to students overall.  Other options involving changing the environment at the Earl have also been suggested in the past.

It is hard to estimate how likely any such changes might be, as two sites for new elementary schools (near Stittsville and near the Kanata “hi-tech” park) are being considered.  It is likely that some interim arrangements for elementary schools will be offered, affecting kindergarten primarily.  The recent discussion paper published at the Board says the following:

“Our secondary schools are very accessible and provide optimal learning environments for older students.  The Grade 7-12 format has been introduced in the OCDSB and has been successful as a grade organization in the Ottawa area for some time.  This may be the best utilization of our space and, in addition to providing outstanding opportunities for our intermediate students in both their learning environment and sense of belonging to a school, such a reconfiguration would also provide better opportunities to implement Full Day Kindergarten Programming at the elementary schools in the community.”
