Library Research Resources

Before you can use these databases from home, you must get the passwords from the library. For copyright reasons, we can no longer post all of the passwords on the school website.
Make sure that you are always searching by KEYWORD , not by SUBJECT!

The Research Path

Begin with more general reference resources, like encyclopedia articles, to give you a sense of the main issues; then use the databases to find critical articles that debate and discuss the issues.

1. Encyclopedias

Grolier (6 encyclopedias)
Contains the most recent versions of World Book, The New Book of Popular Science, Encyclopedia Americana, Lands and Peoples, and Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia.
Encyclopedia Universalis (French)
Le niveau de français est parfois un peu poussé pour nos élèves d'immersion, mais les informations sont excellentes. Il pourrait bien servir d'outil de recherche pour cours avancés dans nos programmes de français.

2. Primary Sources(original, historical information and documents)

Statistics Canada (E-Stat)
Find, sort, compare, analyze, and make visuals with current and historical Canadian statistics on economy, environment, people, health, and crime and justice.
Early Canadiana Online
Canada in the Making, the Fur Trade, the Hudson's Bay Company, Canadian Women's History, Colonial Government Journals, the Early Governors General of Canada, English Canadian Literature, History of French Canada, Jesuit Relations, and Native Studies.
National Library of Canada
Look in the Virtual Exhibitions and the Digital Collections for online, digitized versions of Canadian primary sources (diaries, newspapers, photographs, and other documents) in the National Library and Archive of Canada.
The Globe and Mail Archive, 1884-2003 (Ottawa Public Library)
You can access this archive of The Globe and Mail newspaper articles from 1844 to 2003 FROM HOME ONLY, with a public library card, by going to the Ottawa Public Library's website and clicking on Find articles and research guides.
The Ottawa Citizen (and more)
Thanks to an agreement reached with the Ottawa Citizen, OCDSB teachers and students now have easy to use access to the online "digital" editions of the Ottawa Citizen, the National Post, and 8 other papers from across the country. This web-based access is free for teachers and students to use for educational purposes from both home and school. The on-line paper is laid out exactly as the print edition, but has digital tools, such as RSS feed and voice capabilities for enhanced viewing.
