I believe there are three concepts which enable success within education:
Teamwork - Our team at Earl of March SS includes students, staff, parents and community representatives. A team not only strengthens the overall performance of the group but enables individuals to attain their full potential. Together we are better.
Innovation - Improvement is enhanced by positive changes that enable progress. New ways of doing things may be modification, or quantum leaps, but all enhance growth.
Excellence - This personal goal is defined by many factors but in the end it involves striving to do one's best. When challenged strive for attainment and, no matter what, persist. "Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent." - Ray Kroc - founder of McDonalds
As we work together please reflect on the following:
- Attendance is one of the keys to academic success. Interaction with peers and teachers will help to clarify information and develop communication skills.
- Punctuality is an expectation we have for all our students. It is a courtesy which has lifetime implications both in the workplace and in personal life.
- Courtesy and co-operation are cornerstones to a pleasant working relationship. Working together and respecting each other is the only way to go.
- Positive time management is an aid in keeping up with work and commitments. Successful people are organized people. Choosing to be organized is choosing to succeed. Course deadlines and assignment due dates are to be met on time.
The Earl of March is a comprehensive secondary school. Our goal is to create programs which will inspire all students to succeed. Within our core curriculum we have embedded enriched programming and alternate opportunities for students. These include:
Advanced Placement Credits (those leading to possible university accreditation), presently include English, French Literature, French Grammar, American History, European History, Physics, Chemistry, Computer Technology and Music. We are the largest AP school in Eastern Ontario. Additional information is available by clicking on our AP button to the left.
Arts Certificate Programme Students may receive certification in Music, Visual Art, Drama, Dance or through a Comprehensive programme. Two categories of attainment are available:
- Arts Certificate - 6 courses completed in an area of study
- Honour, Arts Certificate - 8 courses completed in an area of study
French Immersion Programming is available in a wide variety of subject areas.
Cooperative Learning Opportunities in all forms of business are available for credit.
Pathways Programme is a coordinated effort between Earl of March and its feeder schools (Katimavik, Stephen Leacock,W.E. Johnston and Castlefrank) to identify students who are currently struggling in their educational careers and to help them achieve success. Generally it is our goal to coordinate a program in grades seven through nine, which will:
- Enhance the skills of these students in their general learning ability
- Design curricular continuums appropriate to the ability of these students
- Design pathways to graduation which will enable students to succeed and become successful members of our society.
After their grade nine year these students will be counseled on choosing an appropriate series of courses to permit them to graduate and enter the world of work. Our technology and cooperative education programs will be an important link for these students.
Beginning in 2004 we developed an extended consultation process with our feeder schools to develop a coordinated delivery of educational programmes. Principals and teachers from Katimavik, Stephen Leacock,W.E. Johnston, Castlefrank and the Earl of March meet several times a year to discuss curriculum documents, classroom techniques and evaluation procedures. The goal of these meetings is to develop a more effective curriculum continuum in Mathematics, English and Learning Strategies. These consultations will continue throughout the new school year. Together we will strive to improve our educational environments to enable all students to achieve success.
I consider it a privilege to be the Principal of your community school. It is my goal to help every student achieve "Personal Excellence". This is a trust to which I am comitted.
