2014/2015 School Year
Seven EoM Nordic skiers went to OFSAA in Sudbury last weekend and competed with the best in Ontario. Aidan Kirkham got a GOLD medal in senior boys, Katie MacAskill 6th place grade 11, Lauren Egli 10th grade 10, and Anna Vigneron 14th grade 9. Sr. Boys relay placed 10th overall…Aidan Kirkham, Derek Smith, Luke Jin and Philip Vigneron. Congratulations on a great (cold) season!

EOM Senior Girls Volleyball team defeated Nepean HS in a tough battle in the semi-finals and now move on to the City Finals on Tuesday Feb. 24th! Good Luck and Congratulations. …for all your hard work and dedication throughout the season. Go Lions Go!

Under the leadership of Luke Jin (grade 11) and Cora Vasut (grade 10), Earl of March’s annual Operation Christmas Child campaign was another success. Students filled over 40 shoeboxes with hygiene items, school supplies, toys, and candy, to give to children in situations of poverty.

Seventy seven grade 9 and 10 students recently took part in the University of Waterloo Beaver Computing Challenge. The BCC is a problem solving contest with a focus on computational and logical thinking. Earl of March congratulates Eric Assadi, Slava Mironov, Larry Shi, Frank Yu and Simon Zeng for achieving Honour Roll status and being amongst the top students from across Canada. Simon also has the distinction of achieving a perfect score.

Another MOVEMBER wraps up at EOM. Congratulations to the EOM staff and Community Living Classes (Mr. Howe, Mr. Buck, Ms. Carter!) who participated and raised money and awareness for the campaign. Stay tuned for an update on total revenue raised, and the participants.

Wolf Trail Gatineau Trip
What started off as a wet day transpired into a great adventure with some fabulous ladies! The grade 10 girls personal fitness and the senior girls health & physical education class trekked up Wolf Trail in Gatineau last week. They got in some great fitness and enjoyed the landscape.

Varsity Girls Field Hockey
On Thursday the Varsity Girls Field Hockey team participated in John McCrae’s annual tournament and made it to the quarter finals. They had a great day bonding, meeting teams from other cities, playing against different levels of competition and seeking refuge from the rain! Spirits were high and the girls represented Earl well and demonstrated great lions pride! Congrats ladies!

The Grade 11 Photography Class Trip to the Wilson Carbide Mill Trail in Gatineau Park. We went on September 25th, and worked on slow shutter speed images with waterfalls, and landscape composition at Meech Lake.

NCR Crossfit
Crossfit is a strength and conditioning program that is constantly varied with high intensity and functional movements. Last week the senior personal fitness classes had an opportunity to visit NCR Crossfit for an informational and high intensity training session. The students were challenged with a squat seminar, an AMRAP workout and motivated each other throughout the mentally and physically demanding session.
This is one of many field trips the senior personal fitness classes will be going on this semester as the course really focuses on life long physical activity and strives to show students how they can be active and engaged in their community long after high school. It was a great day and the students really showed awesome #LionsPride!

Varsity girls field hockey team
Last Thursday the Varsity girls field hockey team played in a tournament at John McCrae Secondary School. They tied two games, lost one and won one. Charlotte Forknall & Grace Shimokvra were the big goal scorers of the tournament. Overall the weather was great, the girls really played well and the team had a great day!

Race Weekend
Congratulations to the 62 Fitness students that ran the National Capital 10/5km Road Race this weekend. Each student successfully finished the race and are very happy with the unique experience.

Canadian Computing Competition (CCC)
Congratulations to Grade 12 student Hao Wei who will be one of 4 students representing Canada at the International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI) July 6-13 in Brisbane Australia.
Hao was selected for this competition by competing in the Canadian Computing Competition (CCC). Hao was one of the top 26 contestants from Stage 1 and was invited to the University of Waterloo for one week to write Stage 2. At the Stage 2 competition, Hao finished in third place and was selected for the Canadian Team.

OFSAA Girls Doubles Badminton
Congratulations to Jenny Yu and Jennifer Kwok for getting a silver medal at OFSAA in Girls Doubles Badminton, in Chatham Ontario last weekend. This places them second overall in Interscholastic competition in Ontario. Nice work women!!!!

Earl of March currently has 9 international exchange students completing a year of high school with us! They come to us from Germany, Switzerland, China, South Korea and Mexico. 7 of these students embraced the chance to experience an NHL game at Scotiabank Place on Monday, April 22nd…despite the 3-1 loss to the Penguins, a good time was had by all!

2012 Royal Canadian Legion Annual Remembrance Day Poster, Poem and Essay Competition
A Lion’s Roar congratulations goes out to grade 10 student, Joanna Huang, for placing FIRST at both the Local and Zone levels in the senior poem category for the 2012 Royal Canadian Legion Annual Remembrance Day Poster, Poem and Essay Competition. Joanna will attend an Official Awards Presentation Ceremony this Sunday, January 27th. Earl of March is proud of your commitment to honour Canada’s fallen.

NOVEMBER – Financial Literacy Month at the Earl!
Our Earl of March Grade 10 Business students were recognized for their outstanding work in financial literacy, through their BBI20 class, by the Minister of State, Ted Menzies and the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada at the National Launch event held November 1st. Representing our Grade 10 students are: Mayur Tailor, Olivia Perryman, Mei Li, and Carson Zabel Rorai who attended with their Business Teacher Mr. Kelly.

Ms. Asfield and Ms. Higgs would like to congratulate the grade 9 fitness/math class for supporting and running in the MADD Dash on Oct. 13th. The students have been training hard since Sept. 5th and all finished the race successfully. Congrats!!
Ms. Ashfield, Ms. Higgs and Ms. Barnabe took the grade 9 fitness/math class and senior physical education class to Gatineau Park to hike a 10km loop near Meech Lake. It was a beautiful day and many of the students were introduced to the Park for the first time and were made aware of the restorative powers of the wilderness.

Earl of March Senior Boys Varsity Rugby team won the Ottawa City Championship second year in a row!! This qualified them to attend OFSAA in Hamilton (Provincials). The boys won four of the five games they played, which won them consolation round!

EoM’s grade 10, 11 and 12 Fitness classes all participated in the National Captial Race Weekend in the 5 km and 10 km races. The classes have be training since March to prepare for this race. EoM has participated and supported this event since 1998. A big thank you to all the students, teachers and parents who helped make this happen.

Congratulations to Aly Hassan who was a finalist in the 2012 Ottawa Network for Education AppJam
Aly developed an Android game called “Acid Rain”, where you had to protect grass from falling acid rain. Aly won a $1000.00 scholarship, a 6 week summer job at bitHeads and a Blackberry Playbook.
Asha, Cristiana, Kareem and Oksana recently won prizes at the Carleton-Ottawa University French contest in their respective categories. Way to go! Bravo!

A huge congratulations to grade 10 student, Christelle Tan!
Christelle entered an essay in the Royal Canadian Legion’s 2011 Remembrance Day Competition and received 1st place at the Zone level. Her entry was forwarded to the District Level where her submission was awarded 3rd place. Christelle has been invited to attend an Official Awards Presentation on Wednesday, May 16, 2012 at Branch 638 of the Royal Canadian Legion here in Kanata. We are proud of you Christelle!

Earl of March’s Reach for The Top Team is having a stellar year
The team of (left to right) Gordan Fan, Ian Dewan, Rodrigo MoranteTirado, Sanmeet Chahal, and their scorekeeper Yuanhao Wei (missing from photo) placed second overall at the Ottawa League championships on March 30th and have advanced, as part of the top 3 teams from this league, to the Provincial Finals next month in Toronto. A huge congratulations to the Senior Boys Rugby Team for being the 46th Annual Washington D.C Cherry Blossom Rugby Tournament champions.
It was a tough tournament with some great competition, but these boys were resilient and came out on top. Mike Ash, Dave, Nathan, Adam and I are thankful to be a part of this team and this group of outstanding young men.

Earl of March at the Sears Drama Festival
Earl of March performed This Is A Play by Canadian playwright Daneil MacIvor last week at Woodroofe High School as part of the Sears Drama Festival.
The production won two Awards of Excellence. Megan Batty won one award for her acting, while the other award was given to the ensemble.
Congratulations to all who were involved: Adam Brown, Keri Charlton, Megan Batty, Harry Truss, Matt Hertendy, Charlotte McLaren and Colin Lloyd.

Educational Tour to Montreal

Grade 8 Technology Day 2012
On Thursday the 26th of January, students from Stephen Leacock, Katimavik, and Castlefrank schools joined student volunteers as well as Mr. Martin and Mr. Pemberton in Earl’s Technology workshops for an exciting day. Students learned about Tech at Earl and created a project of their own! Students were given a tour of our Custom Woodworking and Manufacturing Engineering facilities as well as learning what they would be doing in the grade 9 course, TIJ 1O Exploring Technologies , next year. The day was a huge success and gave students a real appreciation of what the TIJ 1O gateway course can lead to. Solar panels have been installed onto rooftop of Earl of March Secondary School, one of 13 Ottawa-Carleton District schools chosen to participate in the Renewable Energy Funding for School program.
