The Research Path

Begin with more general reference resources, like encyclopedia articles, to give you a sense of the main issues; then use the databases to find critical articles that debate and discuss the issues.

Make sure that you are always searching by keyword, not by subject!

Before you can use these databases from home, you must get the passwords. The passwords are posted in the school’s electronic Handout folder under “Library.”

Use these databases to access:

  • magazines and academic journals
  • encyclopedias and reference books
  • multimedia sources

Primary Sources (original, historical information and documents)

  • The Ottawa Citizen (and 9 other newspapers)
  • Popular Science Magazine archive
  • Statistics Canada and E-Stat
    • Student resources and quick links
    • Use E-Stat (on right sidebar of StatsCan page) to find, sort, compare, analyze, and make visuals with current and historical Canadian statistics on economy, environment, people, health, and crime and justice.
  • Early Canadiana Online
    • Canada in the Making, the Fur Trade, the Hudson’s Bay Company, Canadian Women’s History, Colonial Government Journals, the Early Governors General of Canada, English Canadian Literature, History of French Canada, Jesuit Relations, and Native Studies.
  • National Library of Canada
    • Look in the Virtual Exhibitions and the Digital Collections for online, digitized versions of Canadian primary sources (diaries, newspapers, photographs, and other documents) in the National Library and Archive of Canada.
  • The Globe and Mail Archive, 1884-2003 (Ottawa Public Library)
    • You can access this archive of The Globe and Mail newspaper articles from 1844 to 2003 FROM HOME ONLY, with a public library card, by going to the Ottawa Public Library’s website and clicking on Find articles and research guides. Also access Study Zone’s Databases and “Ask a Librarian” service.
